The economic impact and the costs arising as a result of physical, psychological, and sexual violence against children worldwide may total $7 trillion per year—more than what is required to prevent those crimes. The conclusion can be found in a study released Wednesday (Jul 1) by ChildFund Alliance as part of an international seminar in Brasília.

The data show that 50% of sexual assaults throughout the globe are committed against girls younger than 16, and that 1.8 million children are estimated to face sexual exploitation and the trade of child abuse-related material. As for physical and psychological attacks, figures indicate that over 275 million children all across the world are exposed to the problem in their own homes, even though difficulty of reporting implies that million other children may be victims.

Also, 5.4% of children in the world are thought of as being involved with some kind of perilous work—these are 85.4 million 5- to 17-year-olds working in mining, construction, agriculture, among other sectors. The survey further shows that global costs arising every year from the worst forms of child labor amount to approximately $97 billion, and costs incurred as a result of children's association with armed groups or forces may reach $144 million.

According to ChildFund Alliance spokesman Felipe Cala, the statistics reveal that all efforts towards violence prevention are worthwhile, even though amounts actually invested remain low. He warns that this sort of aggression may impair victims' learning ability and social skills, and cause lifelong anxiety and depression.

“Few governments launch specific funds aimed at this kind of intervention, and many it the lack of resources,” he reported. “We must that violence is an obstacle to economic development,” he concluded.
