President Dilma Rousseff said today (Mar 10) that she expects the Brazilian economy to have overcome the crisis up to the end of this year. “We'll make all the efforts within our reach to cause the signs of recovery to appear up to the end of this year,” she declared during the inauguration speech of the 21st International Civil Construction Hall, in the city of São Paulo. Rousseff itted, however, that the country is facing a delicate moment. “I'm aware of the slowdown currently challenging the sector and the economy. I've been working systematically to overcome [it] still this year,” she stated.

Before the ceremony, the president was booed by the employees in charge of setting up the exhibit's stands. She was visiting the venue before it was opened to the public.

Walter Cover, head of the Brazilian Association for the Industry of Construction Materials (Abramat), expressed his for the democratic process in the country: “Despite this difficult moment, most executives have maintained balance, want governability, and want democracy to stay. They're expressing accurate criticism, not that simplistic and all-encoming one,” he argued.

Rousseff, who had made a statement the day before on the anti-government protests staged last Sunday (8) in some regions of the country, said that a group of sectors in society have described the problems in exaggerated proportions. “We're not experiencing a crisis the size some say we're experiencing—not by far. We've been challenged by strictly cyclical problems, because our foundations are solid ones,” she pointed out.

As regards the solution to the crisis, the president once again talked about the need for fiscal adjustment. “We must make corrections and adjustments. Precisely in order to achieve that, we're taking measures to adjust public s. Because we've absorbed, in the federal budget, a significant part of the crisis,” she said, referring to the hardships facing the world economy since 2009.

The president went on to highlight, however, that the adjustments are aimed to get Brazil back on track. “These corrections and adjustments have very clear objectives. They make the country's economic foundations even stronger. And they bring about new conditions for recovering growth as well as employment, “ Rousseff said.
