The Brazilian agribusiness exports reached $8.35 billion in March 2016, an increase of 5.9% compared with March last year. The figure beats the historical record for March. Data are from the agribusiness trade balance, released Friday (Apr. 8) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply.

Agribusiness exports ed for 52.2% of foreign sales in Brazil. "In March, we are celebrating an unprecedented participation of the agribusiness in the coutry's total sales. This is an unprecedented participation in the historical series," said Tatiana Palermo, secretary for Agribusiness International Relations. The historical series began in 1997.

While exports rose, imports declined, going from $1.41 billion in March 2015 to $1.16 billion in March 2016.

Soya complex was the main exporter in March. Soybean sales reached $2.92 billion, an increase of 32% compared with March 2015. Meat export ranked second among the main export sectors. The industry exported $1.24 billion, a 5.4% growth rate compared with March last year. Among meat exports, chicken meat was the most exported product by Brazil.

Asia's share in buyer's market fell from 42.9% in March 2015 to 47.5% in March 2016. For the same period, the Middle East developed their buying market of Brazilian agribusiness products by 46.3%, and now ranks third among the blocs and geographical regions to which Brazil exports.

Accumulated value

From January to March 2016, agribusiness exports reached $20.03 billion, an increase of 8.7% compared with the $18.43 billion exported during the same period last year.

According to secretary Tatiana Palermo, these positive industry data are due to a combination of factors like the real devaluation and the opening of new markets. "Our products have become more competitive. We are exporting increasing volumes, which offset the fall in international prices and the final output of values was very positive," said Palermo
