Public Prosecution in Italy has asked the Brazilian government whether Brazilian prisons are in adequate condition in case former banker Henrique Pizzolato should be extradited. He is among the convicts in the “mensalão” scandal, a political corruption scheme which took place when he was a marketing director for Banco do Brasil.

Sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison for money laundering and embezzlement under Criminal Case 470, Henrique Pizzolato had been on the run since November 2013 when he was arrested in Maranello, Italy, in February. Despite the convict's dual Italian-Brazilian citizenship, Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot understands that there are grounds to seek his extradition, and filed an application with the Italian government.

In a letter to Brazil's Prosecutor General's Office (PGR), Italian prosecutors have elicited recommendations for the prison where Pizzolato could serve his sentence. The Italian authorities want to find out whether the prison facilities can “basic human rights.”

Upon receiving the inquiry, Janot asked Brazil's Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo and Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa to designate a prison in Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, or the Federal District where Pizzolato can serve the sentence.
