Rio’s winning samba school to be crowned today

The float frame collapsed leaving people injured during the parade of samba school Unidos da Tijuca.
This year’s winning samba school in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival will be announced today (Mar. 1). Parades were marked by accidents with floats and people injured.
In a note released Tuesday (28), RIOTUR, the government-run firm in charge of tourism in the municipality and the organization of Carnival, said it was deeply sorry for the accidents that took place on the two days the city’s top samba schools performed at the Sambadrome, and pledged to take the necessary measures to avoid new problems.

Experts probe the scene where the accident involving Paraíso do Tuiuti's float took place at the Sambadrome.
The first accident took place last Sunday (26), when a parading float hit some 20 people during the performance of Paraíso do Tuiuti, leaving three people seriously injured. The second one was reported in the early hours of Tuesday (28), and involved the float belonging to Unidos da Tijuca, the fourth school in the highest-ranking group.
RIOTUR head Marcelo Alvez announced soon after Carnival was over that all the agencies in charge of organizing Carnival in the city (including RIOTUR, LIESA, LIERJ) will meet to take action in order to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
Improvements for next year’s Carnival will also be part of the agenda. “The priority will always be the comfort and safety of revelers, both as watchers and performers,” the note reads. RIOTUR is waiting for the conclusion of the probe being conducted today (Mar. 1) on the Paraíso do Tuiuti float by the police.
