The Federal Police on Friday (Feb. 10) launched an operation against a suspected money laundering scheme involving illegal gold trading in the states of Roraima and Pernambuco, in Brazil’s North and Northeast. Eight warrants are being served for search and seizure and the blocking of assets.

One of the individuals targeted by the crackdown—dubbed operation Bal—is Vanda Garcia de Almeida, Roraima governor’s sister.

In a statement, Roraima Governor Antonio Denarium said he heard the news and is unaware of what the probes against his sister may concern. He hopes any involvement is verified under the law. The politician also declared he is available to provide any clarifications and should continue to collaborate with federal authorities to tackle the Yanomami crisis.

Suspects are believed to receive cash from various financiers in Brazil and withdraw or transfer the money to people and companies in Roraima, which in turn buy the illegal gold.
