Brics pledges to bolster multilateral institutions

Brics, the bloc formed by emerging powers—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—pledged Thursday (Jul. 26) to strengthen multilateral institutions of global governance [to] address global challenges.”
“We also recognise the inherent strength of regional initiatives in of the objectives of the broader multilateral system,” Brics leaders say in the document entitled Johannesburg Declaration, the final statement released at the 10th summit meeting, held this week in the South African city.
The emerging powers reiterated their “determination to work together to strengthen multilateralism and the rule of law in international relations.”
In the defense of a multilateral world, Brics leaders stressed their for “the central role of the United Nations in international affairs.”
The declaration was signed by the President Michel Temer, of Brazil; Vladimir Putin, of Russia; Xi Jinging, of China; and Cyril Ramaphosa, of South Africa; as well as India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The summit meeting held by Brics—which represent slightly more than 40 percent of the world’s population and 23 percent of the planet’s Gross Domestic Product—takes place against an international backdrop marked by the unilateral and protectionist policy implemented by the US, to which Brics member states do not subscribe.
