Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes today (Jan. 18) decided to uphold the preventive detention of 354 people accused of taking part in the January 8 anti-democratic riot. He also decided to release 220 people under investigation, with precautionary measures.

The temporary detention of the accused is now changed to preventive as the justice understood their arrest is necessary to ensure public order and the effectiveness of investigations.

Justice Moraes considered that the accused tried to obstruct the exercise of constitutional powers by means of violence and serious threat.

The ones released will be required to wear an electronic anklet and are not allowed to leave their cities or use social media. They will also have their ports canceled and their gun ownership permits suspended.

About 1,400 people were arrested after the riot. Justice Moraes should review the arrests sometime by Friday (20).
