Top court justice releases another 130 pro‑coup rioters

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes decided to release another 130 people arrested over the pro-coup rallies of January 8, when government headquarters were ransacked in Brasília.
This time, all detainees released are men, as Justice Moraes had finished examining all requests for provisional release from women last week. All discharges were approved by the Prosecutor-General’s Office.
As per official figures, 1,014 have been released so far, 407 of whom women. Another 392 people remain in prison, 82 of them women.
In his decision, Justice Moraes argues they showed less offensive conduct and do not represent a threat to ongoing probes.
Most of the people set free are facing charges at the Prosecutor-General’s Office. So far, accusations target 919 over incitement to crime and criminal association. Another 219 will answer for more serious offenses, including aggravated damage, violent disruption of the rule of law, and coup d’état.
