President Dilma Rousseff said today (Aug. 12) that to hold international respect, Brazil needs to show internally that polls decision is respected. In Rousseff's view, the Brazilian democracy is maturing and must face the challenge of tackling its historic social inequality issue.
"The Brazilian state can only respected across the world if, within our territory, people's sovereignty is exercised and fully respected. This sovereignty means the submission to the general will expressed in polls," said the president, when taking part in the graduation ceremony of new diplomats at Itamaraty Palace.
Rousseff asked the new diplomats to look after for international factors not to impose constraints on the free exercise of people's and national sovereignty. At the same time, she asked them to respect the diversity the world presents.
"Recently we live a fascinating process of building democracy in our country. It's a fascinating experience because it's very complex, and it's not finished yet, "said the president. According her, democracy should be exercised to tackle social inequality, a problem that has historically marked Brazil.
Rousseff reiterated that the international financial crisis has caused worldwide problems, specially in developing countries, but that measures adopted by the government have softened its effects on Brazil, and that "[economic] rebalancing should soon restore the foundations for new growth cycle and our place in the world.
