Minister of Secretariat for the Government Ricardo Berzoini met today (Dec. 10) with rectors and prorectors of 41 federal institutions—universities and technical institutes—who were against President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment. They handed a letter to the minister protesting against the proceedings.
"Before threats that endanger the democratic rule of law and important achievements that mark our country's politics, we, rectors of institutions of the federal education system, strongly defend our position against any attempt to dismantle democracy," reported Marcelo Machado, president-elect of the National Institutions Council of the Professional, Scientific and Technological Federal Education System.
Berzoini declared that he will submit the document to Rousseff, who is traveling to Argentina for the inauguration of new President Mauricio Macri.
In a note, the minister announced that it is not possible to use impeachment, "a democratic and constitutional instrument, in a skittish and irresponsible way by those who simply want to take charge of the Brazilian state to use it to their heart's content."
