Brasília - Diretório Nacional do PT discute manifestações de apoio ao governo, que sairão às ruas quarta-feira (16) contra o pedido de impeachment da presidenta Dilma (Valter Campanato/Agência Brasil)

Congress of the Workers' Party (PT) decided they are taking to the streets on Wednesday (Dec. 16) to demonstrate in for President Dilma Rousseff. They are planning to  split up with a group ing the demonstration to be staged by social movements (the Central Workers' Union [CUT], the Landless Rural Workers' Movement [MST] and the National Confederation of Agricultural Workers' [CONTAG]), and another monitoring the Supreme Court (STF) decision on the impeachment procedure in the Chamber of Deputies.

“Our bench is going to take action. We believe we can make a difference with a demonstration here in Brasilia as well. We're taking to the streets, all of our bench, both in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate, and we'll be monitoring the situation as well,” said the PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Sibá Machado.

According to Deputy Wadih Damous, party chairman Rui Falcão called for the mobilization.

“The information that's coming to us from all parts of the country shows that there's energy and willingness in our ranks to mobilize,” Damous said.

The PT congress met at the party's national directorate with Falcão and representatives from CUT, MST and CONTAG to discuss the mobilization strategy for Dec. 16. According to the PT , Brazilian society does not approve of Rousseff's impeachment, even if they are not satisfied with her government.

“A number of lawyers, artists and of the [Catholic] church are rallying to take a stand against the impeachment. They're a part of society which, though not happy about the government, does not such a huge disruption,” said Deputy Marco Maia.

The party is also waiting in anticipation for the Supreme Court ruling about the impeachment proceedings on Wednesday. Last week, Justice Edson Fachin suspended the proceedings in the Chamber of Deputies to reject or uphold the impeachment request against Rousseff until the Court decides about the applicability of a 1950 law that lays out the rules of the impeachment proceedings.

“We are asking the Supreme Court to establish clearly what is the role of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Impeachment would be a dramatic intervention in Brazil's political life. So it can't be done like you're merely judging a civil servant,” said Deputy Wadih Damous.
